Qi is the energy or natural force that fills the universe. Since Qi is the source of life, if you understand how Qi functions and know how to affect it correctly, you should be able to live a long and healthy life.
The Chinese characters for Qigong translate to “energy work.”
Qigong is the ancient Chinese practice of cultivating, cleansing, balancing and directing your vital life force, which is known as qi (chi).
You exercise with the subtle, and not so subtle, energy systems of the elements, the universe, and the human body. Qigong is rooted in the principles of traditional Chinese medicine, and manuals on Qigong go back thousands of years.

“Mindfulness is the aware, balanced acceptance of the present experience. It isn’t more complicated than that. It is opening to or receiving the present moment, pleasant or unpleasant, just as it is, without either clinging to it or rejecting it.” ~Sylvia Boorstein
In its current popular form, Yoga has become a fitness based activity, focusing on alignment and anatomy, postural and physical progression. So it may be a surprise to many that meditation used to be an integral and inseparable part of yoga practice and not at all a separate entity that belongs in a whole other interest group. More traditionally, concentration and visualization practices were practiced integral to the general posture work, and the overall intent of the practice was more about altering your level of consciousness than it is about gaining strength or flexibility.
However, the simplest way of accessing this little known dimension of the practice is via the postures themselves, if you approach your practice mindfully absorbed in your posture and movement. The very word “Asana”, the Sanskrit term used to describe a yoga pose translates to “seat” with the implicit understanding that these postures are seats or gateways for meditation.
So when Estee Ng, new teacher at Meraki Yoga, heard Rodney Yee talking about it in one of his Yoga CDs, something shifted within her, a click of revelation which led to a deepening of her practice. She had discovered yoga two and a half years ago while searching for diets, trainings and workouts, driven by her then self esteem issues around her weight.
Naturally her early practice revolved around the more physically intense and fitness based class types. It also reflected the unsettled state of her mind. “I used to be so distracted, jumping from one thing to another within a short period of time.” Estee recalled.
Specifically, Rodney’s words as she remembered them were: “Doing anything with attention to how you feel is doing Yoga”.
What followed was a change in the way she practiced and her choice of classes. “I used to love love love Vinyasa because it keeps the cardio pumping and that adrenaline rush in the body. But i’ve recently been more inclined to be aware of my own Body and Breath, and to be present in each Unfolding Moment.” Her practice evolved to something altogether more consistent and steady, Hatha based in its long holding of static postures, each posture becoming more like the aforementioned “Asana”, realizing their potential as a gateway to profound meditation. “Yoga allowed me to settle down into my own body, helped me find peace and calmness within myself. “
And this peace and calmness was felt even off the mat, impacting a deep positive change to her life. The biggest decision that came from this shift in mindset? Becoming a yoga teacher. “Yoga has taught me so much: Taking a step back in difficult situations, learning the wonders of going slow and steady – basically these principles are what got me into taking the Teacher Training, to further impart my knowledge and of course sharing my practice with everyone.”
As a teacher Estee radiates warmth and enthusiasm, always with the biggest smile in the room. Her classes typically begin with a pranayama session, a way to calm her students down from the mental distractions of the day, and also a way of centering herself for the practice.
Estee has chosen Meraki Yoga as the platform for her teaching because of the how the environment, staff and students resonate with what she holds dear. “LOVE THE VIBES in meraki: everything feels positive, the studio itself, the students, the teachers. everyone here is so open to learning. the students eagerness to learn something new makes the entire teaching so much more interesting.”
Estee currently conducts Hatha, YinYang and Core classes. Let’s welcome our newest member to the team!

The doors of the second floor studio opened and out poured the full class of yogis aflush with the heat and intensity from a Meraki signature class, Hot Classic Too, a variation of the Hot Classic series of 26 postures. Last to emerge is its brainchild Yvonne Yan, who started the class in October last year.
Yvonne is the managing teacher and poster girl of Meraki Yoga. She is a powerhouse in a petite package, known for conducting her classes with boundless and infectious enthusiasm and energy. Adored by all, getting a spot in her classes almost always requires an advanced booking as spots fill up fast.
Since starting her yoga journey in 2009, the practice has seen many changes in her health and wellbeing. “As a non-physically active person, the most obvious change in my body is definitely the physical strength and flexibility that I have gained from the practice. On a more subtle level, I feel energised, I sleep better and definitely benefitted from a quieter state of mind.” She said.
Having gained these benefits, Yvonne took a very important decision of taking the role and responsibility of a person that spreads these benefits to others via her teaching and entrepreneurial efforts. “A trip to my ashram in India ignited the spark,” she recounted, “My first students were my colleagues in the office! It was definitely nerve wrecking to stand in front of your co-workers or even your boss and telling them what to do. It’s been 4 years since I started teaching, I am glad to say I have gotten over the nerves of public speaking/ instructing.”
She has since become managing teacher at Meraki Yoga, a beautiful boutique studio set in some of the most tranquil surroundings in Singapore, tucked away in the One North enclave, known for its intimate class sizes and calm, clean spaces.
With class sizes kept in the range of 9-20, a typical yogi’s practice is almost always within reach of the teacher, and the Yogi does not get lost in a nameless crowd. Meraki yogis form long term bonds with the teachers and with each other. The feeling of a community or a close knit family is very palpable, “The small class size in Meraki Yoga provides a great platform to sincerely know each and every student individually as a person, to help them in their practice, witness their journey and to have a very trusting relationship with them. I love that as teacher and students in Meraki, we grow together!”
Yvonne thrives in this environment, connecting with each and every person in her class and being a part of the student’s growth and development every step of the way, always within her watchful eye ensuring they practice safely and effectively.
Ironically, her favorite class type is not Hot Classic or even Hot Classic Too. She enjoys practicing plain vanilla Hatha the most, reflecting her shift from her practice being fitness centric in the initial years, to a more holistic one that encompasses deeper layers of her wellbeing. “Ha means Sun and Tha means Moon in Sanskrit, in oriental terms, it means Yin and Yang. A good hatha class balances our yin and our yang energies, gives us strength, purifies us and prepares us for meditation / relaxation.”
Moving forward, Yvonne hopes to further her theoretical and practical knowledge towards increasing her teaching capability. “Continuous education and self study is always in the works.” She said. “As a student I should try and make more time to sit in stillness. To serve others as a teacher, I’d stay dedicated to my personal practice with as many different teachers so I can share a little of their greatness with my students!”
